CUADERNO DE VIAJE, GALICIA Y ASTORGA {LEAVING GALICIA AND ASTORGA}

  1. When I got up and stuck my nose in the glass of my room window, and saw all these women clam digging, made me think about the wonderful life I´m living, a dream compared to theirs......

  1. We still had areas we hadn´t visited, so we took the car again and went all the way to Baiona. We decided to go up to the Parador and surrounded it. We thought it had been a mistake because it took us some time and we missed the opportunity to walk in the village......but as the previous days, we never planned so it wasn´t so important if we screwed it up or not.
Seguimos dando la vuelta.
  1. And we kept on.
  1. Cíes Islands in the distance beckon, inviting you to visit their cliffs. I think there´s a boat to visit them but this will be done some other time.

  1. No sight of the sun, but the temperature was perfect. A Church up here?...It´s , the Ermita de Monterreal, a small chapel normally closed that it´s open every now and then to celebrate weddings or other events.
  1. The truth is that we really laughed along the walk.
  1. We left Baiona through Nigran, we finally stopped at Vigo for a quick lunch.
  1. After a few..."that´s the way"...."oh...not that way, the other one"......"oh I think we got the wrong road again".....we finally found the right road and headed to Cangas del Morrazo to arrive to Bueu
  1. In one of our mistakes, we found this beach, so nice and almost wild where we rested while watching the kites fly. You want the name of the beach?, well I don´t know, I just know it was close to Bueu. Beaches weren´t so inviting this day.
  1. We left towards Marín, to arrive in the hotel just in time for some rest before having dinner in O´Grove. It´s our last day in Galicia and it´s raining, so we´re not going to go to O´Grove walking from La Toja. This is going to be our last dinner in this Province. In Solaina
  1. On the 26th, we left La Toja to go to Ourense, it´s just one hour and a half away from La Toja. We want to go to the market to buy some cheese and after to the station, my daughter is going back to where she lives. We will end our trip by ourselves. We still have two days left.
  1. Bye bye Galicia. One of the things I don´t like about travelling by car, is the moment my I. switch off my music to switch on that voice I hate so much in the car gps, all those "turns to the right", the voice sometimes miss new roads and you know what, the voice lost track and we missed the Médulas, well we finally saw them, but it was so late we didn´t even get off the car, it wasn´t the right time to go walking through the mountains.
  1. This is awesome, the path is full of chestnut trees all over the place. I haven´t written much about this place, because we didn´t walt at all around, just a short stop, I opened the car´s door to shoot a couple of pictures, 4 steps more to take pictures of the chestnut trees and back into the car, we will have to visit this place some other time.
  1. And we left towards Ponferrada, for a quick lunch and have a walk and visit the city. We had lunch in a bar inside the old part of the city, which I´m not even going to mention because we didn´t like it at all. The only sound to break the silence in the streets was our steps towards the castle. Everything was closed until 5.00 p.m. you should take good note of that.
  1. Ponferrada is also part of the Camino de Santiago route. But where´s everybody?. I always thought going on holiday in August was a huge mistake, but I was completely wrong.

  1. Ponferrada is the capital city of El Bierzo in the province of León. It lies on Sil River and it´s completely surrounded by mountains.
  1. We were lucky, they were cleaning the Church (Virgen de la Encina), and the doors were wide opened so we quietly slipped into, I couldn´t resist it, you know, I´m very curious.
  1. At 4.30 the Castle doors were finally opened. The ticket cost 6 Euros per person, children free and you go inside the castle....Is it worth the visit?, I don´t think so really.
  1. Inside the castle the difference between the two parts inside history are quite clear.

  1. And 3/4 of an hour we´re already in Astorga.
  1. Our arrival in Astorga was chaotic. We were staying at the hotel Ciudad de Astorga. The thing is that when we book a hotel, one of the first things we look at is that the hotel has a garage close, to leave the car in one place and not to move it until you leave. This hotel has a garage, the hotel is in the city centre, but what we didn´t know because it doesn´t say anywhere, it was that it only has 11 parking spaces and it was loaded with cars. Besides, Astorga was in the middle of its fiestas and then we knew where was all the population of Ponferrada, in Astorga!.
  1. Once our garage problems were solved, we left for a walk in the evening. The historic centre is very small and we´re just in the centre. The city is in fiestas. When I saw these attractions, I thought of my children. Wow, time flies.
  1. We had dinner in a restaurante which name is Serrano. Dinner was great, and I loved their menu, it was full of sayings and quotes about their recipes.
  1. When we left the restaurante, the people were bubbling over with excitement in the center, there was a spanish group playing, well I´m not so fond of them but I was happy to find some crowd after all......
  1. On the 27th, we wanted to go round Astorga. The truth is that you can see everything in a morning, and we could have left that afternoon to San Sebastián, but we had already booked our room for two days so we decided to stay. And here we were, ready to walk. As you can see in the pictures, the weather again was gorgeous. We´ve been really lucky.
  1. When te original Episcopal Palace was destroyed by a fire, Bishop Grau decided to assign the design of the new building to his friend Antoni Gaudí. When he received the commission, he was still working in Barcelona (at the Palau Güell) and thus he could not move to Astorga tu study the terrain and the area. The bishop sent him photographs to begin the new project. The edifice, built iin gray granite from El Bierzo, is in a neo-medieval style harmonizing with its location. Gaudí used his own workers from Barcelona to work in this project.
  1. The palace is a building with that medieval air very adecuate for the purpose. Gaudí made this in neogotic style. I must say inside, it´s another story.
  1. The cathedral complex of Astorga encompasses three outstanding areas of service to the community: worship (the Cathedral), culture (the archives and museum) and charitable work (the hospital of St. John).
  1. The construction of the present Gothic Cathedral commenced in 1471 as an extension to the east end of the earlier Romanesque church.
  1. In the middle of XVI , Rodrigo Gil, built two chapels inside the cathedral.
  1. The museum was founded in 1954 and further extended in 1982. Five hundred and thirty pieces used in worship and testifying to our culture are conserved here. They include jewels of inestimale artistic value, all of which bear witness to the faith and to the influence of the Gospels.
Hay 10 salas con joyas de la catedral. Más aquí
  1. There are ten different rooms with treassures from the cathedral. More here
  1. We started walking and went with the flow, we arrived to a street where we found a lovely hotel, the owner invited us in to see it. The name, Posada Real Casa de Tepa
  1. Oh this garden was magic, a real hidden garden in the centre of Astorga. It was full of raspberries and blackberries, rododendrums, dead silence and the house gorgeous. I felt shy to take more pictures, the man invited us to walk around the garden and that´s what we did.
  1. I´ve discovered in this link that we share the same tableware and I´ve taken a picture from my laptop. Here
  1. And from here we went to have lunch. My I. wanted to eat "cocido Maragato" (which is a casserole), but I didn´t want to and when we arrived to the restaurant Las Termas the owner came and told me: "I can´t believe you´re not going to eat this. Oh he didn´t know my problems to get rid of that cocido after.......you know "a moment on your lips, a lifetime on your hips".
  1. The Maragato Casserole is eaten just the opposite to others. First you eat the meats, then the chickpeas and then the soup.
  1. I couldn´t leave Astorga without buying some mantecadas (which are a type of spongy pastry similar to a muffin) and other goodies. We are in chocolate land, I had no idea!!, I dind´t know Astorga was famous for its chocolate factory.
  1. After such a huge meal, we couldn´t do anything else but take a nap and then go for a walk to see if we could burn some calories. Let´s see if all the fat I ate, finally decided to abandon my body.
  1. We left this nice hotel behing Hotel via de la plata, until we arrived to the roman plaza.
  1. And went to see the roman baths, underneath the church and the museum.
  1. And when the night comes falling from the sky (as that Bob Dylan´s song says), we went to listen to some music in the park because it´s obvious after the casserole we ate, we weren´t going to have dinner at all. So, from the city walls I´m going to close this travel notebook, with it I´ve spent 2 months writing and remembering every single detail from these holidays full of joy and anecdotes.
¡LISTO! / DONE
